What's everybody doing?

Been a wilder than ever week around here, sorry not much in the way of updates.  Yesterday and Wed were 2 more days of getting out of here after bedtime but all is good...  

All but 2 of the transmissions that are still out there in the lot were finished on Tues. The last one was basically brand new inside.  It was an old automatic but the hubs got into the case and ruined where the seals go so it couldn't be fixed.  It sure had a lot of super nice like new parts in it though.   

All of the bad parts and all of the cases so far, and some bad engine blocks that were outside on pallets are all loaded up in the neighbors truck and gone too.  The engine with the threads gone in the exhaust was torn down as well because it was not repairable.  It's ashamed that was the case because that engine sounded and ran great.  When I started the tear down I could see the crank had been turned and it had been rebuilt not long ago. 

Now it's on to round 2, getting a ton of engines and transmissions out of the 4 car garage.  There are 10 pallets full of them out there.  They will be in here by next week.  At least progress is being made and that's always a good thing.  

 

Everything is on schedule and should be finished Monday.  These pics are from last night and lunch time today.  Once the truck was out of the garage things really sped up and a lot was done this afternoon.  I planned 3 long days for this and once it's done everything will be together and I'll be able to see anything with a glance.  Wood is stacked longer to shorter and every size is together now.  When I had to clean out the barn + tractors at dad's Spring of 2025 everything was just thrown everywhere.  All 10 pallets of motors and transmissions will be in the shop or somewhere easily accessible before too late on Monday also.

When someone shows up to help and cuts time down by 75% vs just me it's time to switch gears for a few days.

Now thats what i call switching gears for sure and by the way i need that cab real bad ....


 

Hey Nappy.  That's the cab for my 520 and 2 stage setup.  I've been meaning to get it all put back together and cover it up so it's ready when needed in the Winter.  Maybe it will get done this year...  

We wrapped up all the moving that I had planned for now.  2 pallets of manuals and 1 pallet of autos are in the shop.  That's the end of all of the loose transmissions from everywhere minus 1 more auto outside.  We did some rearranging in the back right corner and put the washer fluid and some tires back there minus one of the NOS 2 stage blowers on the top shelf.  That was so the diesel furnace never has to be moved to grab something from back there. 

There are still things piled up on the right side of the Camaro but it is all on wheels and easy to move.  After the transmissions are done there's 7 more pallets of motors out there to go through next.  I may drag some Onan tractors in the lot inside next that I know have bad engines on them and part them out.  There's some empty space out there now and 2 pallets of tires from the shop are already out there in the back corner freeing up 2 more slots in the shop racks.  When it's all done it will really help a lot to put more stuff back in the new empty spaces.  

At the very bottom of the far right corner pallet rack I found an entire pallet of checked and tagged good and rebuilt engines I didn't know were back there.  That was nice.  I actually found a lot of stuff back there I didn't know was there.   

My neighbor will be starting on the transmissions tomorrow morning.  

 

My neighbor got all the rest of the ones from outside done yesterday and a few from the 4 car garage.  I had to go out this morning till a little after lunch but he got all of the 4 + 8 speeds on the pallets done minus 2 inner bearings + 1 complete transmission.  There are parts everywhere.  

2 of them were the old vertical shaft transmissions that I found out a lot of the parts in them were the same as the 8 speeds.  The first one was like new inside and the 2nd one in the pics is too.  It just has a lot of gunk in there (1st + 2nd pic) but underneath the gears are like new.

He's gonna finish up the last bit while I go through the ones already torn down on the pallet tomorrow morning.  The 2 3 piece transmissions and a 3rd on the bench are staying together and will be kept on the pallet racks in the shop along with a few 4 + 8 speeds that are really good.  All of the parts will go on a pallet and stay in here as well so they're easier to get to.  

 

I was ready to say the manuals were all done including a few weird ones outside like in the 1st pic but I found more in the shop.  I thought I had several more 3 piece transmissions and I found them along with an early 4 speed right here in the shop on the top pallet rack filled with early round hood parts.  I'll get that down tomorrow or Sat.  I haven't mowed in over 2 weeks again and rain is coming in Sat + Sun so that has to be done tomorrow.   

There were more bad parts than good but there are a lot more good parts than I thought.  We went through about 20 transmissions, all of them already off of tractors from past purchases that came with tractor purchases.  There are still about 100 manuals + automatics here on tractors so there are plenty of parts around...  

Next up will be organizing everything which won't take long.  There will be a pallet of 3 pieces + parts, a pallet of 4+ 8 speed + parts, and a pallet of autos that will be kept in the shop.  I have a ton of automatic parts from Tiffin Aire and a few pumps off and they rarely go bad so I'll leave them together.  

 

Finished up taking the hubs and some other things off of the automatics last night and everything was on a pallet ready to go up on a pallet rack this morning.  

I got the other pallet down this morning and it had 3 old round hoods (60,62,64 models) pretty much all there minus wheels, tires + hoods.  I wanted those manual transmissions checked and something done with them because they were the last ones not on a complete tractor.  As I worked on getting them more torn down so they would take up less space it finally clicked where they all came from.  I bought out a guy near Evansville, IN about 12 years ago.  He had 5 completely assembled and 8 tractors disassembled and this is part of them.  I also know where all the parts are now including wheels, tires, hoods, motors, and everything else.  I had wondered for years where all the round hood parts came from, now I know...  

I'll put a few pics of the parts below.  I'm also gonna start a topic in the Wheel Horse Tractor section next week to show what I found and help me remember it.  

 

Broke my first hub yesterday with the puller.  You can see in the pic what it took to get it off.  All of the parts inside looked good from what we could see but it needed that hub off to separate the case properly and get the rare inner bearing out that turned out to be really good. 

Finished up most of the round hood stuff today minus 2 small things and getting the lift shafts off of the arms.  The roll pins are out but they are pretty stuck.  I still plan on making a post on all of the round hood stuff when I get a minute.  

There was a really nice 8 speed and 4 speed that looked new inside so they were put on the rearend tester and were quiet as a mouse in all gears.  The shafts got polished up and next time the steamer is out they will be steam cleaned and put back on the pallet along with all the manual transmission parts.  If someone wants to buy an entire transmission they will be ready to go.  

 

Taking organizing to new level in the 1st pic.     Really I have a ton of small parts in Fastenal bins that I want to have in their own containers so these worked out great.  I can also put food in them if need be lol.  The 100 small containers + lids were only $7 on Amazon and I can now put things together like the shift rods, springs, balls, + rods in the same shift rod container or divider in the Fastenal bins without having to split them up.  They will also work good in the parts dept and I can label and stack them.   More space for me that I desperately need.  

I had to go out this morning and the neighbor did too so he took the day off.  We've got a lot done in the past 2 weeks and made a lot of space.  He took the bad trans parts and cases off to scrap a few days ago and had 1,800 pounds of stuff, a good payday for him.  

I got started on wiping down and organizing the transmission stuff so I can get the small bench freed back up so I can go back to work on Carsons 121.  It should be wrapped up tomorrow.  Someday I may steam clean and blast all of those parts so they are more like new.  The big bench has space freed up so my neighbor can start on the 9 pallets of engine stuff from the 4 car garage starting with all the almost bare blocks and parting out stuff I know is bad like Onan engines...  He will need the crane for some things so it will work out good that he can do it by himself.  

 

Small bench is cleared and cleaned so I can get back to work on Carson's 121 tomorrow.  There's someone else coming in from PA tomorrow for a lot of parts so I may not get a lot done but at least everything is ready.  

We got to 3 of the 9 engine pallets in the 4 car garage today in the shop to check out and part out if need be.  There are 4 Onan 20HP on the back of the pallet in the 3rd pic and I doubt they're any good but they are complete and will have a ton of good parts on them.  The other 2 have no decals so I'm not sure what they are and the Kohler is a vertical shaft 18hp Magnum twin with an oil filter.  Nice motor but I can't see ever using a vertical shaft for anything.   The 4th pic has 9 Wheel Horse engines on it but they aren't  tagged so they prob came with tractors I bought over the years and I don't know if they're good or not.  We may start some of the complete ones on the bench to check them if they feel good.  

In the two last last pics the manual transmissions and parts are on the 1st shelf off of the floor, the 3 piece transmissions will go above that where the rims are, and the automatics are at the top.  That will make them easy to get to.  

Still a lot more rearranging to do but it's coming along good.
